Hair Care & Styling Tips

Shampooing your hair every day will not harm your hair but if you shampoo less your hair will look smoother and the scalp’s natural oil will make your hair shinier. So try shampooing every other day or so. If you do shampoo daily, use a mild shampoo. Opaque shampoo has more conditioner in it, but if a shampoo is clear, it strips more oil from your hair.

No matter which shampoo and conditioner you use, they all seem to quit working after a while. The main reason is buildup on the hair. Use a clarifying shampoo or treatment if you notice this problem. For shine, use a spray with a silicon base. Mist the spray onto your hands and then smooth it over your hair.

“Brushing your hair 100 times a day will make it shiny” is a myth. If the brush is too hard; it can damage the root and tear the hair shaft. The oils in your hair will spread without brushing.

Static may be caused by your brush, so you may be able to smooth your static-charged hair by cleaning your brush every day with water and a dab of shampoo.

1. To add lift, or texture, to your hair, wait ‘till your hair is nearly dry, then sprits the roots and blow-dry your hair with your head tilted forward, and brush from underneath. as far away from the scalp as possible.

2. Hide split ends by spritsing them with a volumizer and blow-dry under with a round brush.

3. After shampooing, if you use a conditioner with moisturizer as well as using a hot oil treatment, your hair will have more texture.

4. For more volume, have hair cut in layers.

5. Apply mousse to damp hair, then blow-dry.

6. Buy lightweight formula styling products.

To straighten, smooth hair strands with a flat-backed paddle brush. Brush broad sections of hair from top to bottom, following along with your blow-dryer with the compressor attached.

When cutting bangs, stylists first sprits the hair and then comb the bangs flat on the forehead. They decide the length they want the bangs, place small sections between two fingers and cut below that length. They continue cutting across the forehead.

Then they comb the bangs through and touch them up wherever needed.

Trendy bangs that are cut for an uneven, casual look are often cut in one big clump.

If you want the crimped look

1. Start with hair that’s all one length or with layers only at the bottom.

2. Shampoo, towel dry, comb out hair and part in the middle and blow-dry straight.

3. Take a one-inch section of hair and clamp it between a crimping iron, starting at the roots. Hold for five to seven seconds.

4. Continue down the entire length of the section until the end.

5. Take another one-inch section about three-inches from the first so that you leave enough straight hair between the crimped sections---for contrast.

6. Repeat steps three and four.

7. Crimp as many sections as you need to complete the entire head.

8. Sprits with a finishing spray to hold the style.

Barrettes can be like razors, especially on wet hair. If your hair is fine, you need to be more careful because if the barrette gets tangled you’ll rip your hair when you take it out.

Coloring your hair can damage it if you don’t know what you’re doing, but if it’s done properly it’ll make your hair shinier. When you bleach your hair, you’re lifting color from the hair shaft and with it you’re taking moisture and protein. This causes your hair to become slightly damaged, or “stressed”. You should wait a day or so before shampooing, after you color it, and then use a shampoo and conditioner specially made for color-treated hair.

To shampoo color treated hair, make sure your hair is wet before you put the shampoo on it, lather only once, rinse well, and condition with every shampoo. When you lighten your hair, use products that don’t contain ammonia, as this can be harsh on your hair. Try Clairol or L’Oreal for lightening your hair. If you’re going to darken your hair, you won’t be robbing your hair of its natural oils, but go a shade lighter than you think you want because you can’t go back but you can always make it darker.

Hairstyles are all lengths from short to long and often straight. Men’s hair is longer but not below the shoulders and it is often brown. Bangs are back for both boys and girls. Girls’ hair is often worn back away from the face in a ponytail or a bun. For a special occasion hairstyles avoid too much height, color or curl.

Try an elegant twist, roll or upsweep. For girls there are many new hair decorations and hair jewelry on the market. They are reasonably priced and can be purchased at super-markets, dollar stores, or drugstores---Almost anywhere.

There is a wide variety of jewelry for the hair; jeweled clips and hairpins, and an endless variety of hair jewelry:

Headbands are popular and are made with silk and crystal beads, leather, and all the popular materials being used for all jewelry. There are beautiful, glittery hair picks, hair clips [small to large, fancy bobby pins, usually in crystal, snap clips [jaw clips, hair combs, bun covers, bun accents, crystal tiaras, tiaras with diamonds, hair pins that attach to the hair with Velcro and are made of crystal flowers, stars and pearls that appear to float in your hair.

You’ll find crystal hair sticks for longer hair. These are used to help hold the bun, ponytail, topknot, the “weave” or the classic French twist as well as to beautifully decorate.

There are chiffon sheer barrettes, velvet barrettes, puffed polka dot barrettes and gold-colored metal barrettes. There are pony tail elastic bands made with chiffon, velvet, leather, with beads, crystals and all the materials and designs that are used for the currently fashionable bracelets and necklaces.

This is a season of glamour, borrowed from the 40’ to 80’s.

Some of this hair jewelry sells for hundreds of dollars---but it is all beautiful.
