Hair transplantation procedures can help women as well as men. Women don't have to suffer in silence anymore about their hair loss.
by Anonymous

December 5 2003--Estimates put the total number of women with hair loss in the United States at 20 – 30 million. Fortunately, hair restoration procedures are equally successful with women as they are with men. However, there are different hair loss issues women face that impact the appropriateness of hair restoration for them.

Women tend to have a different pattern of loss than men.( See chart) While most men have frontal loss as a part of their thinning pattern, women tend to retain an intact hairline and suffer diffuse thinning behind the hairline. This makes it easier for a woman to conceal a procedure but it also means that it will take longer for a woman to notice the effects of a procedure. Following a resting period of approximately 90-120 days, a transplanted hair begins to grow at its normal rate of about ½ inch per month. Men will typically begin to notice growth in about 5 months. In contrast, women typically wear their hair longer and the new growth is much harder to detect until it is significantly longer than for men. Consequently, women will often wait a year or longer to see results.

As a rule, hair loss in women is much more likely to reflect an underlying illness. Therefore, it is very important that in discussing their hair loss concerns, women provide a detailed medical history to the physician. Hormonal imbalances and other life events can alter female hair growth and cause excessive shedding. These situations are typically transitory in nature and resolve themselves without intervention, thereby making hair restoration procedures inappropriate.
